Councilor Sergio Machín, who had been on leave for months, has resigned from his government areas in the Cabildo and will return to his position as a teacher, although he will retain his seat in the first island institution. Machín's decision comes after a long period of estrangement and tension with the president, Pedro San Ginés.
Last May, San Ginés withdrew Sergio Machín's powers over Waste and Classified Activities, leaving him only with the area of the Security and Emergency Consortium of the Cabildo. At that time, the councilor sent a statement to the media expressing his "surprise and perplexity" at this decision by the president, whom he even described as "egocentric".
Machín already stated in that statement that once he rejoined the Cabildo, after his medical leave, he would decide what to do with his "status as an elected councilor of the highest island institution." Now, according to La Voz, he has already made a decision, which implies keeping the seat but resigning from the government areas he still held.
