The San Bartolomé City Council held the event PLEITERÍA this Thursday at the Municipal Theater, an emotional tribute dedicated to the artisan Manuela Martín Viera, affectionately known as “Mela”, in recognition of a lifetime dedicated to preserving and transmitting the popular artisanal traditions and crafts of the municipality.
The event brought together family, neighbors, institutional representatives, and people linked to the world of culture and crafts in an evening marked by emotion, remembrance, and recognition of a woman considered a living reference of the cultural heritage of San Bartolomé.
The mayor of San Bartolomé, Isidro Pérez, highlighted during the tribute that “this recognition represents an act of justice and gratitude towards those who have dedicated their lives to preserving our roots and our cultural identity”.
“Manuela Martín Viera symbolizes the value of handmade work, silent dedication, and love for our traditions. Women like Mela have allowed many of our customs to remain alive today and to be part of the collective memory of our town,” said the mayor.
For her part, the councilor for Crafts, Ana Lopes Lopes, emphasized the fundamental role of traditional artisans in the conservation of the island's cultural heritage.
“From the City Council, we want to continue recognizing and highlighting the women who, like Mela, have been true guardians of our artisanal legacy. Their work not only has enormous cultural value, but also human and emotional value,” affirmed the councilor.
Born in La Asomada and deeply linked to San Bartolomé, where she built her life with her family, Manuela Martín Viera has dedicated decades to traditional crafts such as empleita, roseta, embroidery, and cutwork, learned from childhood by following her mother's example.
The PLEITERÍA tribute specifically sought to recognize all those women who have kept popular traditions alive through craftsmanship, patience, and daily effort, becoming fundamental pillars of the municipality's cultural identity.
The night also featured the musical performance by Alexis Lemes, who accompanied an evening full of sensitivity and memory with his music.
The event was developed with the collaboration of the Crafts Department of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, directed by Aroa Revelo, reinforcing the institutional commitment to the protection and dissemination of the island's artisanal heritage.
From the San Bartolomé City Council, the great reception and citizen participation were thanked in a tribute that served to publicly recognize the figure of Manuela Martín Viera and to vindicate the value of craftsmanship as an essential part of the municipality's history and identity.
