The San Bartolomé Theater hosted the 1st Teguey Festival last Saturday. The event featured the participation of Timbeque and the presentation of the “Taro de Honor” to the former mayor, Alexis Tejera.

The mayor of San Bartolomé, Isidro Pérez, congratulated the Teguey association for “this emotional festival, which filled the San Bartolomé Theater with wonderful folklore”. The full capacity enjoyed good music from the hosts, Teguey, and Timbeque. “They demonstrated to the public not only the great work that both groups have been doing, but also the varied repertoire with which they surprised and drew applause from the public,” says the mayor.

The Popular Music Group “Timbeque” opened the show, with its eighteen members from the south of the island of Fuerteventura. The majoreros gave their best on stage, with traditional Canarian music themes from the South American scene and their own compositions.

Next it was Teguey's turn, who offered pieces of island folklore combined with their own compositions that speak of the feeling of this island, the hard life of the peasant or the hardships suffered by sailors. In this concert, part of the repertoire shown comes from the group's first record, drawing applause from the public.

The popular music group Teguey began its journey at the end of 2017, after a group of residents from the town of San Bartolomé and experts in folk music met to organize a popular music group. From those beginnings until today, Teguey has a total of 21 members, chaired by Sergio García and directed by Leo García Corujo.

The musical line they follow was clear in this new commitment, highlighting songs from the traditional and popular Canarian repertoire, popular South American and self-created songs. The instruments that accompany them range from a timple and a contra, to guitars, lutes, bandurrias, acoustic bass, percussion and keyboard.

"Taro de Honor" for Alexis Tejera

From the City Council, the highlight of the night came after the song “Folías” performed by Teguey, with the presentation of the “Taro de Honor” to the former mayor Alexis Tejera.

“The feeling of the land is reflected in this theme, and from the land come the fruits that the farmer jealously keeps in the Taro”, commented the presenter, José Duarte. “Teguey has been building his with delicacy, with care and in it he keeps the seeds of our songs, but we also keep culture and traditions and the people who have worked to keep them present and not forgotten. People who have supported us from our first moment, giving us direction and security and believing in our project, making themselves available to us at all times. Teguey has therefore created this Taro de Honor, and an even greater honor is to present it to Alexis Tejera”, he added.

At this moment the public stood up, and amidst applause, Alexis Tejera's son, Iker Tejera, collected the award accompanied by his mother Marta Sarmiento, showing great gratitude. They were accompanied by Tejera's family and friends.

The Councilor for Culture, Alma María González, thanks Teguey for organizing this 1st Festival, showing the support of the San Bartolomé City Council "to folklore, popular music and Teguey a heartfelt applause for the ascending trajectory that they have been taking, positioning themselves in a short time among the great Canarian musical groups", taking the opportunity to thank Timbeque for their presence at this musical event and this award to Alexis Tejera.
