This Thursday, October 16, the San Bartolomé City Council recognized the historic trajectory of El Grifo wineries in an institutional event in which a square in the municipality was officially renamed, thus commemorating the 250th anniversary of this wine company.
The event took place at the entrance of La Florida, bringing together numerous public representatives, local residents, and, of course, the winery's workers.
During the ceremony, the plaque was unveiled, honoring and renaming the space, thus fulfilling the agreement unanimously approved in a plenary session on May 28, 2025, following the special regulations for Honors and Distinctions of the San Bartolomé City Council.
The Mayor of San Bartolomé, Isidro Pérez, and the owner of El Grifo wineries, Fermín Otamendi, were present at the event.

Therefore, Mayor Isidro Pérez wanted to take the opportunity to emphasize the fundamental role that El Grifo has played in the identity and economy of the municipality. "Since its inception, this winery has been an economic engine of San Bartolomé, boosting the primary sector with respect for the land and for the people. El Grifo exemplifies the courage of the men and women of Lanzarote who have known how to transform difficulty into opportunity, and the volcanic landscape into culture, identity, and economy," he said. "Bodegas El Grifo is one of the historical emblems of the 'baratero' municipality."
Throughout his impeccable career, he has been responsible for taking the name of San Bartolomé and Lanzarote around the world, obtaining different international awards such as Mundus Vini, Bacchus, Decanter, and Berliner Wine Trophy. In fact, it should be noted that this year he received the Canarias 2025 Award for Tourism Excellence in La Palma. A milestone that not only reflects the quality of his product but also demonstrates its cultural and gastronomic importance as a benchmark for the region.
For his part, the owner of Bodegas El Grifo, Fermín Otamendi, appreciated the institutional gesture and the affection of the citizens, emphasizing that this tribute represents a collective recognition of the work of entire generations who have made it possible for El Grifo to continue being an international reference for volcanic wine today.
