The San Bartolomé City Council has favorably reported on the basic and execution project for intervention in the Playa Honda Urban Park and the Plaza de Guacimeta, drafted by the architect Iván Torres Ramón and the landscape architect and agricultural engineer Martin Toimil Mato, winners at the time of the ideas competition with the proposal 'Activate the crater'.
The execution of the works will be carried out through inter-administrative cooperation granted to the Cabildo de Lanzarote, which announced two weeks ago that it had the final project after making several modifications and obtaining a favorable report from the College of Architects of Lanzarote.
Thus, the City Council points out that it is the Cabildo that is responsible for tendering the work, making available to the first island institution the portions of land owned by the municipality affected by the project, for the sole and exclusive purpose of executing the project, after public tender.
The space on which the intervention will take place has an area of 69,258 square meters on the front and rear esplanade of the IES of Playa Honda and the soccer field. It will have 85% financing from ERDF Funds, through the EDUSI strategy (framed within the Conurban Azul strategy) for the rehabilitation of degraded spaces, with a budget of 2.3 million euros.
"A place of reference"
The new Playa Honda Urban Park aims to be "a space that generates a unique place for recreation and outdoor sports for citizens", according to the mayor, Alexis Tejera. "May it become a public meeting space for citizens, where they can carry out various activities and a place of reference for the town that is not only respectful from a sustainable point of view but also a celebration of the essence of the island. Water, zocos and vegetation. A place where new technologies are the best way to respect and learn about the tradition, history and culture of Lanzarote,” he adds.
This proposal integrates into the design, to achieve a unitary aesthetic, the entire area of the bike lane connecting the Playa Honda Maritime Promenade and the Lanzarote airport, dog park and pipican, asphalt project of the Playa Honda soccer field parking lot and, within the pluvials, the storm tank and pumping stations.
According to the City Council, the entire space will be articulated around craters and will have a sports area, taking advantage of the multiple soccer and basketball courts that this area already has, emphasizing the sports aspect of the park, so that elements will be included "that will make it the ideal place to walk with the bike or go running". It will also have a living area, a park with shaded areas, benches and space to relax, with a kiosk and adapted toilet, all for quieter activities, as well as an urban gym in another crater, for an adult audience, including a petanque court and outdoor gym.
On the other hand, there will be a children's area with swings for the enjoyment of the little ones with seating and shade areas for their parents, so that everyone can find their place in this space.
The amphitheater is contemplated in the largest crater, multiplying the number of arched walls that structure the logic of the entire park and also serving here as a bench for spectators who come to enjoy local theater or any other type of cultural activity. There will be an artificial lake, a bar with a viewpoint, a skate park and a dog park.
The Plaza de Guacimeta will complete the park complex, aiming to achieve a feeling of openness towards the views offered by the sea, towards the connections that bring other areas of the island closer and physical openness, with a large square that allows organizing activities and events of municipal and even island scale. It will have water play fountains in the part closest to the beach to provide a special point at the end of the promenade, to cool off and
The colors and materials that will be used are those of the earth, "always keeping in mind the aesthetics of Manrique's work".
