The San Bartolomé City Council has formally requested the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda to establish the Coordination Committee of the César Manrique Airport, in compliance with Royal Decree 697/2013.
This request is based on the fact that this body has not yet been established in Lanzarote, which would allow the municipality of San Bartolomé to have a voice, since, among other aspects to activate its constitution, the Lanzarote aerodrome exceeded eight million passengers in 2024 and is located in more than 80% within the municipal area of San Bartolomé.
The mayor of San Bartolomé, Isidro Pérez, has stressed that the airport is not only a key infrastructure for the connectivity of Lanzarote, but also an element with a direct impact on the life of the municipality. He also pointed out that "San Bartolomé cannot be left out of the strategic decisions that affect its territory and its citizens.
The official letter was sent on October 20 and includes the council's commitment to an active and responsible participation in the decision-making that affects the present and future of the island's main entry point.
The next step to be taken by the San Bartolomé Town Council is to forward this request to the Government of the Canary Islands, as it is the entity that can propose the implementation of this initiative through the airport coordination committee of the Canary Islands.
