Eugenio Robayna, Councilor of Roads and Works of Teguise, was this Thursday on the program Buenos días, Lanzarote of Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero to answer some questions about the damage in Famara and La Gracios due to the wind.
The incidents in the municipality of Teguise began last Sunday due to the rain and wind, which forced the traditional market to be raised ahead of time. The strong winds have been felt especially in Famara and La Graciosa, where they have reached gusts of up to 110 kilometers per hour.
"We arrived in La Graciosa on Monday and we were waiting on the boat to be able to dock but the situation was abysmal and the colleagues from the town hall were sending us videos of the Christmas lighting and the spotlights of the sports courts and the truth is that we were with an impressive fear because the children were in school and I asked the president of the Cabildo and the mayor of Teguise that we had to suspend classes urgently", he declared.
According to Robayna, "President Oswaldo Betancort and Mayor Olivia Duque have moved to La Garciosa to try to alleviate the damage and Puertos Canarios has been notified to verify the state of the jetty, which is the worst thing there is, and the houses buried in sand, the main thing is to act quickly in these streets."
"Now we focus on looking at the availability of the companies on the island of La Graciosa to remove the sand and I have already spoken with the manager of the Emergency Consortium to ask for his help and ask for the collaboration of the Emerlan volunteers to unblock the streets," he revealed.
Caleta de Famara was also one of the areas affected by the strong winds. "The residents of Famara and La Graciosa have told me that they had never seen anything like it and, according to experts, it is the cliff of Famara that has caused the wind to collide against it and move downwards," he explained.
Regarding the telephone and electricity services, the councilor commented that "they have already been restored although there are electricity poles in the Teseguite area that are fallen, but we have already informed Telefónica to raise them." "Right now access to the Famara bungalows is closed and maintenance has been carried out on the main road from Monday to Wednesday," he said.
Robayna continued explaining that "the residents of La Graciosa feel annoyed because they suspended classes in Tenerife due to the wind but not on the eighth island, they don't remember it." "Classes should have been suspended in Soo, Famara and La Graciosa," he declared.
"In the meeting we had on Monday night urgently, I told the mayors that we have to take into account what happened in Valencia, at the slightest thing it is better to suspend activities because we have to foresee the population," he concluded.
