The Cabildo of Lanzarote has reopened the road connecting Puerto Calero with Puerto del Carmen to traffic, a strategic route for the mobility of the municipalities of Yaiza and Tías for the island's tourist and local connectivity, after completing the works for the comprehensive rehabilitation of the road surface and the renovation of the water supply network.
This action has been financed with funds from the Canary Islands Development Funds (FDCAN) managed in Lanzarote by the Planning and Projects department headed by the vice-president, María Jesús Tovar.
The works have had an awarded budget of close to 700,000 euros and have allowed the transformation of a road that was in a very deteriorated state, with numerous recurring incidents, into a safe, functional road that meets the standards Lanzarote deserves.
The Minister of Public Works, Jacobo Medina, stated that "we are fulfilling a clear commitment: to improve a road that was in very bad condition and that today is once again in decent condition for residents, workers, and visitors." Medina emphasized that this action "is not limited to resurfacing, but rather resolves a historical problem."
In this regard, the councilor explained that "this road suffered continuous incidents due to the poor condition of a water pipe that ran under the roadway, which caused constant subsidence and damage. Therefore, in addition to rehabilitating the surface, we have proceeded to completely replace the pipe, guaranteeing a lasting solution and preventing future damage to the road."Jacobo Medina highlighted that "we continue to drive the Plan for the Better Maintenance of Island Roads with actions, acting in a planned, coordinated, and responsible manner, so that Lanzarote's roads are up to the standard required by a modern, safe, and competitive island."Finally, the counselor thanked the technical staff for their work and the institutional collaboration that has made this project possible, emphasizing that "investing in roads is investing in road safety, in quality of life, and in the economic development of Lanzarote."
