Puerto del Carmen has begun a year of celebrations to mark its 60th anniversary as a leading tourist destination, an event that will extend from October 2025 to October 2026.

Six decades of history, evolution, hospitality, and commitment to sustainability will be the common thread of a program of events that opened with a special gala held last Friday, September 26, within the framework of World Tourism Day, under the impulse of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). The event took place at 7:30 p.m. on Avenida de Las Playas, in front of the Atlántico Shopping Center, with access by invitation due to limited capacity.

“The 60th anniversary is an opportunity to highlight the transformation of Puerto del Carmen, which has managed to consolidate itself as an international tourist destination without losing its essence and its link with the local community,” said the mayor of Tías and head of the Tourism area, José Juan Cruz.

The success of Puerto del Carmen is not only understood by its sun and beach appeal, but also by the conservation of its landscapes, the preservation of its ecosystems, and the commitment to a responsible tourism model.

“We want to continue growing from sustainability, quality, and innovation, always with an eye on the well-being of the residents and the excellence demanded by our visitors,” added Cruz.

ZEConsciente Recognitions

During the gala, the ZEConsciente Recognitions took place, aimed at figures who have contributed to the development and consolidation of Puerto del Carmen as a destination.
In this edition, Ico Montelongo Pérez received recognition for his commitment to local products and the ice cream tradition; Josefina Gopar, a pioneer of commerce in La Tiñosa with the first stores adapted to the arrival of tourism; Emilio Pérez Franquiz, master of fishing arts and first president of the La Tiñosa Fishermen's Association; and Kenneth Gasque, founder of Ironman Lanzarote and a benchmark in the international projection of sports tourism.

The evening was also the setting for the presentation of the commemorative image of the 60th anniversary of Puerto del Carmen, a renewed visual identity that reflects the evolution of the destination and that will accompany promotional, cultural, and tourist actions throughout the year.

“The calendar of activities that we present wants to be a tribute to all the people who, in one way or another, have made these sixty years of history possible,” said the mayor.

The event also featured a special performance by the company “Cantadores”, made up of 25 artists and technicians, who offered a journey through the musical and cultural memory of the Canary Islands through three prominent voices: Ciro Corujo, Manuel Estupiñán, and Pedro Manuel Afonso.
With this event, Puerto del Carmen opened a commemorative calendar that will last until October 2026, celebrating six decades of history, transformation, and international projection as a tourist destination.
