Primero Teguise criticizes the bad image as well as the serious problems that it has generated for residents and visitors of the Costa Teguise area. The heavy rain that occurred in the town this past Saturday caused serious flooding in many streets, trapped cars, the flooding of some premises and dependencies of tourist accommodation, and the electrical breakdown of many homes and businesses.

“We must thank the Civil Protection, Civil Guard and Local Police services for their prompt action, and the Red Cross, Emerlan and all the volunteers and neighbors who have made it possible to return to almost normal in matters of traffic and mobility. “But it is also our obligation to ask ourselves if Costa Teguise was prepared for something like this”, Jonás Álvarez, councilor of Primero Teguise, tells this media outlet.

"We have been requesting on several occasions, since November 2023, the cleaning and maintenance of the channels and ravines existing in our municipality, something that the government group has rejected, voting against said request", clarifies the municipal councilor.

“It seems unusual, but it is not the first time that we have suffered floods. Precisely, the last occasions were in 2016 and 2017, where we already had some current councilors in that government group. So what we have to start demanding is a cleaning and maintenance plan for storm drains, which is carried out periodically and is also reinforced in each weather alert that is recorded”, continues the councilor.

In addition, they point out that "there is no record of any cleaning of storm drains or sewers, especially if there was awareness of the previous alert situation, the City Council could have taken the necessary measures to prevent or mitigate the effects of heavy rains, but the situation was wasted."

In addition, the political formation asks that the state of the Hurón ravine be checked, which flows into Las Cucharas Beach, and which has a mouth that is too narrow, which may have caused the water to seek more exits when it was overwhelmed so quickly.

“We are aware that there is a tender for the drainage of the Hurón ravine, but what we are going to demand is a project to condition the area and that the passage of water and its subsequent damage can be mitigated more specifically”, communicates the councilor of the formation, Jonás Álvarez.

In addition, "we have been requesting on several occasions, since November 2023, the cleaning and maintenance of the channels and ravines existing in our municipality, something that the government group has rejected, voting against said request" clarifies the municipal councilor.

In that sense, Álvarez recalls that “Costa Teguise is the residential town with the largest register in the municipality and, in turn, one of the most important tourist areas on the island. "Being the main image of tourism in the municipality, and being the economic and social engine of Teguise, it is evident that we cannot allow situations like those experienced this Saturday to happen again. So we will have to invest in prevention, cleaning and maintenance.”

The councilor will request a report from the maintenance service regarding storm drains, sewers and public areas at the next Municipal Plenary, in addition to demanding again a maintenance and cleaning plan, which includes an action protocol in case of environmental alerts or pre-alerts.
