The plenary session of Congress rejected this Friday the two decrees on housing enacted by the Government this week. The first of them had the votes against from PP, Vox, Junts, and UPN to a regulation that contained measures such as the extension of rental agreements, rent caps, the limitation of purchases by "vulture funds," and tax benefits for landlords and tenants.

The vote -172 votes in favor and 178 against- was held by roll call of the deputies one by one, after a heated debate in which the Minister of Housing, Isabel Rodríguez, and the bloc of parties to the left of the PSOE accused the right-wing bloc of being on the side of the "vultures" and not of the "people."

The Lower House also repealed with 166 votes in favor and 184 against, the decree that introduced the automatic renewal of rental contracts in Spain and which had been in force for barely sixteen hours.

In favor of the decree, which was defended by the Minister of Social Rights, Pablo Bustinduy, voted the PSOE, Sumar, ERC, Bildu, Podemos, Compromís, BNG, and CC, while against it voted the PP, Vox, Junts, PNV, UPN, and CC.

Although it was not planned, the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, intervened minutes before the vote to ask the groups to be "brave" and "coherent" and to support measures that were "ambitious, necessary, reasonable, balanced, and designed through dialogue, which provide solutions."

Otherwise, "the damage to our country will be immense," pointed out Sánchez, who directed his message to PP and Junts.

The Minister of Housing says they will continue fighting

The Minister of Housing and Urban Agenda, Isabel Rodríguez, assured that after the rejection of the two decrees, "it is time for people to see and reflect" and that her Government "always looks forward and will continue fighting."

In statements to the media after the extraordinary session ended this Friday, the minister acknowledged that they have not had time to think about what comes next, but she did advance that they will continue fighting.

Feijóo blames Sánchez for electoral maneuvers

After the plenary session, the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, accused the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, of using the housing problem to carry out "electoral maneuvers," in one of the "most shameful" days of the legislature, after Congress had thrown out the two decrees on housing.

In a press conference, Feijóo has called on Sánchez to set a date for the elections as soon as possible and has stated that he is "prepared" for an electoral call.

"If the president needed a narrative to call elections and thus try to cover up the corruption that we do not yet know, go ahead. He believes he has the alibi, let him set a date," he stated, after the plenary session of Congress rejected this Friday the two decrees on housing submitted to a vote.
