The PP councilor in Teguise, Roger Deign, has used a surprising argument to defend the oil explorations in Lanzarote waters this Thursday. The councilor has assured that in the event of a spill, it would be necessary to "give cleaning work to 30 percent of the unemployed population." In addition, he has stated that "surely at the end of the day, the beaches" would be "much cleaner."
Deign's statements have caused a small stir in the Plenary Session, and even the PIL spokesperson, José Dimas Martín, ended up asking for "respect" for the PP councilor, even if he does not share his statements. "I ask the mayor to bring order and the PSOE colleagues that if they want to refute, they should do so, but we must have respect," he said.
The CC councilor, Echedey Eugenio, wanted to state that he also did not believe Deign's words, "who says that when the beaches are stained, people will be hired to clean them."
Deign is the only councilor of the Teguise City Council who has voted against the motion on oil explorations, while his two party colleagues, María José Costa and Toñi Suárez, have abstained. Jonay Díaz did not attend the Plenary Session.
The PP councilor wanted to explain during the plenary session why he defends oil explorations and has assured that oil is a "necessary" product. "The social alarm created locally ignores the importance of this product, which cannot be easily replaced by clean energy," he said.
In addition, he has assured that in the last 20 years "there has only been one major spill", which occurred in the Gulf of Mexico. In this sense, he recalled that this place is one of the largest tourist spots in the world, which "was not" affected by this accident. "Cuba has wells on the beach with bathers around," he insisted.
Despite his surprising statements that a possible spill would generate jobs, the councilor also pointed out that in the event of an accident it would be "almost impossible" for the oil to reach the coasts, due to "the trade winds and the strong Canary current."
