The President of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Astrid Pérez, has proposed to the Chamber's Board the incorporation of a new sculpture in the Parliament's hall with the aim of having La Graciosa, recognized as the eighth island of the Archipelago, also represented in this institutional space.
At the main entrance of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, an emblematic work by the Canarian sculptor José Abad, who passed away in 2025, welcomes visitors. It symbolizes the seven islands through stones brought from each of them, along with a larger stone representing the Canary Islands as a whole. However, this creation does not include La Graciosa, whose official recognition as an island occurred later.
Given the impossibility of the original author carrying out this piece, the President of Parliament proposed the election of a new sculptor to carry out an independent work.
Finally, the chosen sculptor has been Paco Curbelo, born in Lanzarote in 1956. He is a renowned artist whose creations are a tribute to movement, wind, and space, made in stone, marble, onyx, and other natural materials.
Astrid Pérez has emphasized that the existing sculpture will not be modified under any circumstances, fully respecting the artistic legacy of José Abad. The new piece will also be located in the Parliament's hall, so that La Graciosa will have its own representation on equal footing with the rest of the islands.
As president of the Chamber and as a native of Lanzarote, Astrid Pérez has highlighted the importance of all the islands of the Archipelago being represented in the seat of Canarian popular sovereignty, in the same way that already happens with the official anthem or with institutional flags"The representation of La Graciosa in Parliament is not just an artistic issue, but also an act of institutional justice and recognition of the territorial reality of the Canary Islands," Astrid Pérez pointed out
