The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has announced the advance of the general elections to Sunday, July 23, given the poor electoral result of the PSOE yesterday and has said that it is time for citizens to "take the floor".

In an institutional statement from the Moncloa Palace, Sánchez has personally assumed the regional and municipal results of this Sunday and has convened a Council of Ministers this afternoon to dissolve the General Courts.

The head of the Executive has said that after the result of 28M there are reasons that advise submitting to the will of the Spanish people the policies that should be applied and to see the political forces that should lead this phase.

"There is only one infallible method to resolve doubts, the best thing is for the Spanish people to take the floor and speak out," he said after reporting that he had held a meeting with Felipe VI to inform him of the decision to convene the Council of Ministers and dissolve the General Courts.

The President of the Executive explained that the first consequence of the 28M results will be that "magnificent regional presidents and socialist mayors are going to be displaced with impeccable management and this despite the fact that many of them have seen their support increased".

He pointed out that the second consequence will be that numerous institutions will be administered by new majorities formed by the Popular Party and Vox.

Sánchez has acknowledged that Sunday's votes give a message that goes beyond the regional and municipal sphere.

"I believe it is necessary to give a response and submit our democratic mandate" to the polls, he said after warning that his Government has complied with its program and that Spain is about to overcome the crisis derived from the pandemic and the consequences of the war in Ukraine, in a context of economic growth and job creation.

In addition, he recalled that Spain will assume the presidency of the Council of the European Union from July and that it is a challenge to face.
