The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez (PSOE), will travel this Saturday, August 1, to Lanzarote to enjoy a few weeks of vacation on the island. As is customary since he has been president, the head of the Spanish Executive will stay at the official residence of La Mareta, a property located in Las Caletas (Teguise) and owned by Patrimonio Nacional.
Sánchez will arrive on the island of Lanzarote with his wife Begoña Gómez and will spend several weeks on the island. These summer holidays come after the appearance of the Spanish president in the Congress of Deputies and after the last Council of Ministers. This Tuesday, the Spanish Executive approved the Organic Law Project on Public Integrity against corruption in contracting at a time when former members of his Government have been convicted or are being investigated for corruption cases.
In recent years, Pedro Sánchez has chosen Lanzarote to enjoy his summer holidays. Usually, he visits the Haría Artisan Market. In 2023, he did so accompanied by Jesús Calleja and filmmaker Alejandro Amenábar. The following year, he repeated the plan and did so with his wife Begoña Gómez and the president of the Catalan Generalitat, Salvador Illa.
A new security contract
Just a few weeks ago, Patrimonio Nacional awarded, by urgent procedure, a new contract for the security of the official residence of La Mareta in Costa Teguise for the next twelve months.
The contract to guard the residence where the President of the Government of Spain traditionally spends part of his holidays has been awarded to the Madrid-based company Clece Seguridad S.A. for a value of 266,094.13 euros. The budget for the remainder of 2026 amounts to 77,276.65 euros and 188,817.48 euros in 2027.
A commission from Hussein I where the Countess of Barcelona died
La Mareta in Costa Teguise was built at the request of King Hussein I of Jordan in the late 1970s. The design is by César Manrique and architect Fernando Higueras. In the late 1980s, Hussein gifted the house to Juan Carlos I, King Emeritus of Spain, who in turn ceded it to Patrimonio Nacional.
This space has special relevance in recent Spanish history, as the Spanish royal family also spent part of their holidays here. In the year 2000, during the Christmas holidays, Juan Carlos I's mother, María de las Mercedes de Borbón y Orleans, Countess of Barcelona, passed away in this property. At that time, the then Spanish president José María Aznar (PP) and his wife Ana Botella (PP) were also vacationing in the property.
Former president José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero (PSOE) also vacationed in La Mareta, even spending some birthdays in this official residence.
