Oswaldo Betancort, president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, was this Thursday on the program Buenos días, Lanzarote of Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero to answer some questions, especially about the housing emergency that exists on the island.
In this sense, Betancort has pointed out that "we have a historical problem of lack of housing in Lanzarote and to which vacation housing has been added." He also stated that "since we have been in the Cabildo, we have asked the Government to regulate vacation housing, we have removed those vacation homes that did not meet the basic requirements of the market and, on the other hand, to position public housing, official protection and the affordable rental regime in Lanzarote."
In addition, he stressed that in this legislature 400 homes will be made available to the population in Lanzarote and assured that "the Cabildo has bought homes and will continue to do so for affordable rent."
He also wanted to respond to the accusations of the PSOE that assured in a statement that his alternative to the lack of housing on the island is "living in motorhomes." He has asked the Socialist Party to "help him" because, according to him, "the socialist mayors, who are the ones who give licenses, to stop doing so."
In this sense, he gave as an example the III Plan for the Modernization of Puerto del Carmen and said that the Cabildo of Lanzarote "had to remove 1,500 tourist beds from that plan because they are going to give licenses to new tourist infrastructures."
