The counselor of the Mixed Group NC in the Island Council of Lanzarote, Óscar Noda, has presented a motion for the next island council plenary session in which he requests "that the Cabildo of Lanzarote change the name of the environmental complex, removing the name of 'Zonzamas', so that in that area common to the complex and the site, the denominative association to the historical site prevails, thus restoring its
identity and historical dignity that it deserves."
In addition, Noda considers that "the Cabildo of Lanzarote should manage with Google so that in the Google Maps application, in any of its multiplatform versions, the Zonzamas Site always appears as the first search option in order to promote the dissemination and identity of our historical site."
The request of Counselor Óscar Noda responds to the fact that "Zonzamas is one of the most outstanding archaeological sites in the Canary Islands with a wide range of vestiges of the first settlers of Lanzarote: the Majos. It was declared a historical monument in 1979 and an initiated file of Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) in 2001, but it has expired and, consequently, cannot be declared an archaeological park if it is not BIC, one of the pending duties of the Cabildo."
"The importance of this site for the island of Lanzarote," continues Noda, "was reused after the decline of the pre-Hispanic society and it is historically documented that it was inhabited after the Conquest of the island, in 1405." For Óscar Noda, "the respect for our history and our ancestors is questioned when speaking of Zonzamas we do not know if it is an institute, a landfill or a site. The decision to build an immense landfill in the crater of a volcano less than a kilometer from an ancient indigenous village is something that we cannot change, but we should rationalize the use of the name Zonzamas."
"The government group talks a lot about its interest in our historical heritage and now has the opportunity to show it the respect it deserves. We must understand the importance of that site for the history of the Island and, it is public and notorious that many people who are interested in visiting the site end up in the environmental complex that currently receives the same name. We must, among all, dignify the Zonzamas site, give it the true identity and importance it has for the historical heritage of the island of Lanzarote," he continues.
In addition, regarding the applications that are most used to search for locations and places of interest, searching for how to get to "Zonzamas" in Google Maps always marks, as an automatic priority, the Zonzamas Training Center, located in Arrecife.
