This Thursday, the Non-Law Proposal (PNL) for the Recognition of the Fishing Industry and the Canning Factories in Lanzarote was presented in the Parliament of the Canary Islands, through the Creation of a Museum of the Sea in Arrecife.

The deputy Yoné Caraballo and the local president of Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista (NC-BC) in Arrecife, Servando Pérez, were accompanied by Domingo Delgado Morín, honorary advisor of the Spanish Association of Fishing Cities and the Cabildo of Lanzarote, who have exposed the importance of Lanzarote's historical memory, especially that referring to fishing and the canning industry.

Thus, Caraballo pointed out "that he is very proud to be able to bring to the Canary Chamber an initiative with as much identity and cultural value as fishing and what it meant economically for Lanzarote and La Graciosa, and that there can be a museum in the capital that is a point of information, dissemination and education to understand the past and present of the island".

For Domingo Delgado, "the table of Lanzarote's historical memory is incomplete. Both fishing and the canning industry have not had the recognition they deserve, and have been relegated to the background when it was a very powerful sector with the largest sardine fleet in Spain and with up to eight canning factories. A true economic engine that fed many conejera families before the development of tourism".

For his part, Servando Pérez wanted to have a recognition "to the fishermen of Lanzarote and La Graciosa for their professional and cultural work, but especially to the women who worked in the factories tirelessly".

With everything, from the Canarian organization they hope that this PNL will go ahead unanimously in Parliament, since it will be a recognition to the entire fishing sector of Lanzarote and La Graciosa and to the groups and people who work in the defense of culture and historical heritage.
