The Arrecife City Council plenary session unanimously approved the motion presented by the political group Lanzarote En Pie (LEP) for the summer camps organized by the capital's council to be "inclusive and adapted."

Likewise, LEP points out that the motion contemplates "that trained and qualified personnel be available in each of them," and that the Cabildo de Lanzarote and the Government of the Canary Islands be urged to adopt "the same measures."

The municipal proposal is based on the fact that families of people with disabilities, especially those with children with long school vacations, "face a real family problem every summer due to the impossibility of reconciling their work life with the vacations of their children due to the lack of inclusive activities such as camps or play centers, among others."

"The approval of this motion is great news for schoolchildren with functional diversity who, with the arrival of summer, feel discrimination closer than ever, because the activities organized in the camps are not inclusive, do not have accessible spaces, nor do they have staff prepared to meet their needs. On the other hand, inclusive camps combine fun, games and educational process, which makes children more involved in learning," explained the LEP councilor, Leticia Padilla.

"In this way, minors learn to speak in public, express themselves and function without the help of their families, as well as to fully participate in cultural and artistic activities in equal conditions helps the little ones to get out of their comfort zone, providing them with autonomy, self-confidence and valuable resources that they can use in their daily lives," says the municipal spokesperson.

In this sense, Padilla has also recalled that her group's proposal "is not only supported by various international agreements but also by Law 1/2019, of January 30, on Physical Activity and Sports of the Canary Islands, which specifies that the Canarian public administrations, in their respective areas, will promote and encourage the practice of physical activity and sports by people with functional diversity, trying to eliminate any obstacles that may hinder their full integration."
