The Cabildo of Lanzarote is carrying out these days an intensive cleaning campaign on the roads around Arrecife, specifically in the surroundings of the neighborhoods of Maneje and Argana, removing more than 600 tons of waste, including belongings, rubble and plastics, mainly.
In the cleaning work, which has been coordinated by the Areas of Landscape and Employment of the Cabildo, led by Samuel Martín and Jesús Machín Tavío, respectively, a specialized company with trucks and other heavy machinery participates, in addition to twenty workers from the Employment program 'Caring for Lanzarote and La Graciosa'.
"After several neighborhood complaints, the Cabildo of Lanzarote listens and acts," says President Oswaldo Betancort, after the visit to the area and verifying the state of the road after the removal of tons of garbage and debris by thirty trucks. Betancort also appeals to "the responsibility of citizens to keep the island clean, taking care of and respecting the environment and avoiding the proliferation of illegal landfills."
In this same line, the Councilor for Landscape and Environment, Samuel Martín, stated, who stressed the need for citizen collaboration to preserve these spaces. "From the Cabildo we are making an important effort to improve the cleaning and maintenance of our rural and urban areas. However, we need the involvement of citizens so that these improvements are sustainable over time," says Martín.
'Caring for Lanzarote and La Graciosa'
For his part, the Councilor for Employment, Jesús Machín, explains that this cleaning and waste collection action is part of the program, promoted by the Cabildo, 'Caring for Lanzarote and La Graciosa', which has involved an investment of 12.5 million euros thanks to FDCAN funds.
"This program is divided into eight work packages, ranging from maintenance, cleaning and waste removal, to the improvement and beautification of different enclaves of the island, such as coastal areas, public spaces and rural environments, also achieving the hiring of 158 unemployed people on the island," details the councilor.
Fines of up to 30,000 euros
The Cabildo of Lanzarote calls on the population to contribute to keeping the areas where action has been taken clean, avoiding the proliferation of new landfills. It is also reported that fines can reach the figure of 30,000 euros.
In this sense, the existence of the clean points belonging to the Cabildo located in Arrecife, Playa Honda, Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca is recalled, for the dumping of waste, whose hours are from 8 in the morning to 6 pm from Monday to Saturday and from 9 am to 2 pm on Sundays. In addition, the town halls also have a free collection service for belongings.
