The mayor of Teguise, Olivia Duque, accompanied by the councilor for Transport of the City Council, Javier Díaz Gil, has held a working meeting with the councilor of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, in which **different actions aimed at improving mobility** in the municipality were discussed in detailAlthough transport is an island competence, both administrations agreed that institutional collaboration is fundamental to respond to the real needs of the residents of Teguise. "Although public transport is not a direct competence of the City Council, we assume the responsibility of leading, mediating, and coordinating so that solutions reach each of our towns," stated the mayor
Costa Teguise Interchange, activation and new routes
One of the central points of the meeting was the functionality of the preferential stop of the Guaguas Interchange of Costa Teguise. It was confirmed that **the first line that will depart from this interchange will be the Costa Teguise – La Caleta de Famara line**, improving the connection between two strategic centers of the municipality.Additionally, with the new island transport contract, a new direct line between Costa Teguise and the airport will be included, a relevant improvement for both residents and visitors, with the possibility of expansion to new future connection lines, providing greater connectivity to the municipality
From the town hall it was highlighted that the interchange not only improves mobility, but also becomes a functional and safe space, as it has common areas and a playground, adding value to the population.
During the meeting, the possible creation of an internal line in Costa Teguise was also analyzed at the request of the residents, for which the Cabildo will carry out a technical study to define the most suitable option, assessing its viability, route, and level of demand in the town. Likewise, the installation of shelters for school stops in the different towns of the municipality was addressed, with the aim of improving the safety and comfort of the students.
Another of the issues addressed was the implementation of the taxi-bus service in Caleta de Caballo and Los Cocoteros, a historic demand from the residents of both communities. The Cabildo reported that the files are pending the signing of the necessary document for their activation, a prior step to their definitive launchAdditionally, topics such as the current situation of the taxi sector in the municipality were discussed, which are also of crucial importance for its connectivity. Among them, new licenses, fare updates, joint services, and VTCs
Regarding future planning, the viability of a preferential bus lane in the Puerto del Carmen – Costa Teguise corridor was addressed, a measure that would allow for reduced travel times and improved service punctuality. This line of work is part of the common objective of moving towards more efficient, sustainable mobility adapted to the island's population and tourism growth.
Both administrations agreed to hold a new follow-up meeting to evaluate the progress made and finalize the execution deadlines. Olivia Duque, stressed that "important steps have been taken and we are going to continue working with determination until public transport in Teguise is up to the standard our neighbors deserve, because we are talking about quality of life, territorial cohesion, and equal opportunities".
The Teguise City Council "thus reaffirms its commitment to work from institutional cooperation to achieve real progress in mobility, guaranteeing a public transport system that is more accessible and adapted to the reality of the municipality".
