The Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, has accused the previous government, led by the Popular Party, of "preventing the judicial authorities from being informed" of the alleged irregularities in the works of the Civil Guard barracks.
During the Interior Committee of the Congress of Deputies, held this Monday, Marlaska appeared at his own request as a result of the political scandal derived from the Cuarteles case. The case, which continues under judicial investigation in the Court of Instruction number two of Madrid, investigates 193 awards of works in barracks of the Armed Institute between 2014 and 2019.
In this judicial procedure, two senior officials of the Civil Guard and two businessmen are being investigated. One of them, the contractor from Lanzarote Ángel Ramón Tejera de León, known as "Mon".
The head of the Interior pointed out that during that period of time, the Popular Party ministers of the Interior Jorge Fernández Díaz and Juan Ignacio Zoido were in control of the portfolio. In addition, the Secretary of State for Security was José Antonio Nieto and the Director General of the Civil Guard was José Manuel Holgado.
During that period, the Internal Affairs of the Civil Guard was already investigating the alleged irregularities in the minor contracts or fixed cash advances that benefited the businessman from Lanzarote.
In addition, the El País newspaper revealed this Sunday that under the last Government of Mariano Rajoy, the then Director General of the Armed Institute, José Manuel Holgado, allegedly ordered the cessation of the investigation and its filing.
