The social and cultural association for women Mararía held its annual assembly this past Wednesday to report on the work carried out in the last twelve months, the accounts, and the initiatives planned until the end of 2026.
In the review of projects, the president, Nieves Rosa Hernández, warned of the impact of the housing emergency the island is experiencing and which affects the normal development of the stays of women and minors in supervised housing.
According to her, “even if the programs are fulfilled, life normalizes, and victims of violence or exclusion integrate into the labor market with decent wages, it is impossible for them to find housing. And how are we going to put these mothers and their children out on the street?”
To avoid these situations, Hernández proposed to the Minister of Social Welfare and Exclusion of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Marci Acuña, the review of temporality criteria to address extreme cases. Her intervention served to congratulate the association for another year completed and to confirm her willingness to move towards an agreement that guarantees the financial stability of the historic women's organization, as well as other third-sector entities with responsibility in the social sphere.
“You know that it is my commitment and my intention, but sometimes the administration's timelines do not respond to the urgency of community work,” she said. She also highlighted the opening of the 24-hour crisis center for victims of sexual violence, which she referred to as “another shield” against sexist aggression.
Annual Assembly
In its thirty-second annual assembly, held at the Torrelavega society in Arrecife, the feminist entity renewed its support for the leadership, approved the annual management, and defended collaborative network work, “an opportunity to continue growing, learning, and providing the best service to the women of Lanzarote,” commented the president.
In total, thanks to the development of diverse projects, carried out in the municipalities of Tías, San Bartolomé, Arrecife, Haría, and Yaiza, a food bank, toy distribution, and information center, the number of beneficiaries was 1,314, which is added to the more than 2000 interventions or advice, the 25 women and 29 minors who passed through the supervised housing, and the attention and awareness from 16 violet points deployed at festivals and celebrations in the last twelve months.
