The management team of the social and cultural association for women Mararía, with Nieves Rosa Hernández and Carmen Delia Reyes at the helm, received yesterday at its facilities a delegation from the Diputación del Común de Canarias, which for the first time in history is headed by a woman, Lola Padrón. During the working meeting, the organizations agreed to establish joint actions on equality through collaboration from their different areas of competence.
Lola Padrón, who was accompanied by the Deputy for Equality between Men and Women against Gender Violence, Ana María de León, and the legal officer, Gloria Gutiérrez, reported on the functions of this pioneering sectoral deputy in Spain, created with the intention of mediating between citizens and public administrations for the protection of victims of gender-based violence, the wage gap, effective equality between women and men, sexual harassment, labor discrimination and parity in political participation.
For her part, Nieves Rosa Hernández addressed the work of advice, awareness, training, protection and support carried out by Mararía, both in the island, regional and national levels, as part of the Canarian federation Arena y Laurisilva and the coordinator of women's associations COMPI.
In addition, this first contact served to assess and reflect on the figures of violence in Lanzarote in 2024, which suffered an increase of 2.8% compared to the previous year, according to data provided by the Service for Attention to Women Victims of Violence of 112, which recorded a total of 1,386 calls for this reason.
The attendees expressed their intention to maintain closer and more permanent relationships in the future, "in order to maximize efforts in achieving substantial progress in the goal of equality, which is a priority of the political and social agenda in our community."
