The socialist senator for Lanzarote and Fourth Secretary of the Senate, Manuel Fajardo, traveled to Dubai with the Third Secretary of the Senate, María Ángeles Luna, to attend the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th of December at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP-28).
The conference, which has been held annually since 1992, is a global event that this year was held at the 'Expo City Dubai' congress center in the United Arab Emirates under the slogan 'Unite. Act. Deliver', to advance
on the global climate agenda, promoting public-private cooperation and financing for a greener and more prosperous future.
Throughout these days, Fajardo attended various meetings of great interest, including the plenary session in which the Minister of Ecological Transition and Vice President of the Government, Teresa Ribera, and the Commissioner for Climate Action, Wopke Hoekstra, spoke. He also had the opportunity to discuss the development of the COP with the general director of climate change of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Montañés, and with José Juan Lorenzo, also from Lanzarote, who headed the delegation of 'World Tourism Organization' (UNWTO).
Likewise, the delegation had a meeting with the Spanish Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Íñigo de Palacio España, in which the situation of foreign companies and investors in the region was discussed and, especially, regarding fossil fuels and investments in renewable energy.
He learned firsthand the information related to the 'Spanish Group for Green Growth', which brings together numerous Spanish companies, in which half of the IBEX 35 companies and numerous SMEs are present, and held several working meetings with different representatives from both the public and private sectors, such as the Spanish Chamber of Commerce, the company Naturgy, KPMG, the Elcano Royal Institute, the Spanish Energy Club and the company Xcalibur, which owns 87% of Spanish capital.
The senators in attendance emphasized the importance of "regulation and political security" in the matter, and public-private collaboration. They highlighted the fact that in the so-called green economy there are "great economic opportunities for Spain", considering it as a factor of competitiveness for our country.
