The councilor of the Canarian Coalition, Mame Fernández, has reached an agreement with the PP and will join the government group in Tías, which was in the minority after the breakdown of the agreement with San Borondón three weeks ago. Fernández, who from the beginning had opted to support the PP but without joining the government, has finally decided to join the government group.
The councilor himself has summoned the media this Wednesday to make his decision public, which has been adopted by the Local Committee of CC in the municipality, but not by the island leadership of his party. In this regard, the councilor has explained that on the morning of this Wednesday he informed the party leadership by "email", but has not yet "received a response". Still, he has made it clear that "there is no turning back" because the decision has been adopted by the Local Committee.
As announced at the press conference, Fernández will be the first deputy mayor of the municipality and will take "two or three areas" of government, which he has not yet specified. The councilor has indicated that it will be the mayor, José Francisco Hernández, who announces which will be his councilorships.
"For responsibility and for stability"
Mame Fernández has assured that he has taken the pulse of "residents and supporters of this municipality" and after that he has decided to offer support to the PP "for responsibility and for giving stability". "We are going to support a set of measures that we have been demanding until now. Our support will be decisive to complete these issues before the end of the legislature," said the councilor, who mentioned projects such as the municipal swimming pool or the General Plan.
And this is precisely "one of the fundamental agreements" for the councilor to have decided to be part of the government group. "Those things that have been demanded, try to solve them as much as possible," he insisted.
Although Fernández does not have the support of the island's leadership, since he communicated his intention via email this Wednesday morning, he did want to thank "colleagues from this party at the island level and the mayors" who have helped him to "make the change of location within the bench of the Municipal Corporation". However, he also did not want to mention which mayors he thanks for their support in order to "not put anyone in a difficult position".
The CC councilor also apologized to "those who do not understand this decision". "I ask them for a vote of confidence, that they trust me," he said.
An announced agreement, but with last-minute complications
In recent weeks there has been much talk about the possibility that the CC councilor would join the government in the City Council of Tías. However, everything became complicated when the controversy arose between the current mayor, José Francisco Hernández, and the former mayor, José Juan Cruz Saavedra, over the Fomit credit for the works on Avenida de las Playas.
Cruz Saavedra criticized the current mayor and blamed the PP for having to pay more than 1.5 million euros in interest for not having properly justified these works. A day after the press conference offered by the former mayor, the CC councilor confirmed that these statements had sown doubt in him and even warned that he would present a motion of censure together with the PSOE and San Borondón if the PP had lied to him on this matter.
However, this same Monday he showed his support for the PP in the Plenary of Tías, thus facilitating the approval of the proposal of the Department of Finance on the acceptance of the offer made by Banco Santander in relation to the Fomit credit. While the PSOE and San Borondón abstained on this single point of the agenda, both Fernández and the PP gave the green light to this issue.
Fernández explained that he had decided to support the PP out of "responsibility". "The future could be bad if we did not approve this point, because we can enter the list of defaulters of the banks and that can reduce the possibility of requesting some more credit. That is the problem," defended the councilor.
