Unidas Sí Podemos has presented this Tuesday Nona Perera, doctor in Archeology and until now General Director of Cultural Heritage of the Government of the Canary Islands, as a candidate for Lanzarote to the Parliament of the Canary Islands. Perera has also announced that she will be accompanied by the activist Mamadou Niang, who will occupy the second position on the island list and with whom she will share work and campaign.
The presentation, which took place in front of the hermitage of San Antonio, was attended by prominent representatives of Podemos on the island of Lanzarote, such as María del Río (regional deputy for the island during the last two legislatures) and Nicolás Saavedra (Minister of the Environment of the Island Council and candidate to preside over the institution).
Throughout the event, Perera has claimed the “symbolic value” of Tías, the first municipality to achieve a progressive coalition government after the 2019 elections, highlighting the work carried out by Nicolás Saavedra at the head of the Social Services area. The candidate highlighted the need to overcome “the policy of large macro-projects”, warning about the “threat” of a new road projected by the Ministry of Public Works on rustic land in Lanzarote territory. “The only formation that has opposed the policy of waste is Unidas Sí Podemos”, he recalled.
For his part, Mamadou Niang (number two on the list), has expressed his determination to become “the first African deputy in the history of the archipelago” and provide a “necessary intercultural perspective” within the regional legislature. Niang has announced that Unidas Sí Podemos will promote a “Law of Habitable Islands” in the next legislature, along the lines of the residence laws existing in other territories. “It is urgent to have a law that makes life easier for those who come to work and is implacable with those who see the Canary Islands as a place of speculation”, he concluded.
