The Cabildo of Lanzarote has put out to tender the renovation of the old headquarters of Radio Insular in Arrecife to convert it into a residential resource for the protection of minors, with an investment exceeding 540,000 euros and an execution period of twelve months. This project is part of the personalized care model implemented this term by the Institution chaired by Oswaldo Betancort.

Betancort has pointed out that this action “is part of a responsible planning to provide the island with adequate infrastructures that allow to tutor minors in optimal environments adapted to their educational and personal process”.

The Councilor for Social Welfare and Inclusion, Marci Acuña, has explained that the new center will be integrated into the personalized care model developed by the Cabildo, based on reduced cohabitation units and comprehensive care. “Every child and adolescent under the guardianship of this Cabildo receives the care they deserve,” he indicated, emphasizing that the objective is to consolidate a system adjusted to the regulations that set a maximum of ten minors per center and that aligns with the numerous care policies deployed by the Corporation in Lanzarote and La Graciosa.

For his part, the Minister of Public Works, Jacobo Medina, responsible for the contract, has assured that this work “will represent a great boost for the protection of minors in Lanzarote and La Graciosa. A space that is currently in an advanced state of deterioration and that, after this intervention, will serve to add one more space for the care of minors and that will also have everything necessary for professionals to carry out their work in the best conditions,” he added.

The property, located on Juan Negrín street in Arrecife, will be expanded and refurbished for its use as a protection center. The intervention includes a partial demolition and new construction, an option that, according to the justifying report, is the most suitable in terms of constructive quality and durability, guaranteeing the adaptation of the space to the specific needs of coexistence and educational care.

The tender contract has an estimated value of 508,347.14 euros and a base tender budget of 543,931.44 euros, including the IGIC (35,584.30 euros). The investment will be assumed with the Institution's own funds. The procedure is processed through simplified open tender and offers may be submitted electronically until March 17, 2026 at 10:00 hours. The foreseen execution period is twelve months and the work is not divided into lots to ensure correct technical coordination.

Currently, the Social Welfare and Inclusion Area of the Cabildo manages six residential care centers for minors: one in Yaiza, another in Tinajo, and four others in Arrecife: Alegranza, Arrecife, César Manrique, and Timanfaya. These resources provide comprehensive care services, including accommodation, maintenance, educational support, school monitoring, healthcare, leisure activities, and accompaniment.
