The Government group of the Cabildo of Lanzarote has presented this Thursday a motion to urge the State Government to assign a permanent detachment of the Civil Guard in La Graciosa

On December 11, 2019, the Parliament of the Canary Islands unanimously approved a Non-Law Proposal requesting the presence of a permanent detachment of the Civil Guard in La Graciosa. This request had already been supported previously, in 2010, by the Interior Committee of the Senate, with the support of the CC, PP and PNV groups.

Despite these agreements and the willingness of the Teguise City Council to offer a place for the establishment of the detachment, La Graciosa must guarantee the public safety of an island with a population of around 700 inhabitants, a figure that multiplies during the tourist season.

Oswaldo Betancort, president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, has stressed the urgency of this measure: “The safety of residents and visitors of La Graciosa must be a priority. We cannot continue waiting while the eighth island continues to grow in popularity and number of visitors. A permanent detachment of the Civil Guard is essential to guarantee a safe and protected environment”.

The president of the Security and Emergency Consortium, Francisco J. Aparicio, said for his part that this Government group “continues to bet on guaranteeing the well-being of both residents and visitors to the island, and that goes hand in hand with the increase in the presence of police officers”.
