The Plenary Hall of the Cabildo de Lanzarote hosted the press conference for the presentation of the first High Sensitivity Conferences in the Canary Islands - Working on Mental Health, a pioneering initiative that will be held on March 19 and 20, 2026, and that will bring together professionals from different islands of the Archipelago.

The activity promoted by the Institution chaired by Oswaldo Betancort, through the Social Welfare and Inclusion Area, has the coordination of the Spanish Association of Highly Sensitive Professionals (HSP). The conferences are aimed at families, the general public, associations, teachers, companies, and professionals interested in understanding and working with high sensitivity from different social spheres.

In the presentation participated the counselor of the Area of Social Welfare and Inclusion of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Marci Acuña, and the vice president of PAS España Canarias, therapist and researcher in High Sensitivity, María González. In addition, supporting the initiative and with a fully collaborative spirit, the insular director of Education, Carmen Pellón, has also attended the event.

During the event, Marci Acuña highlighted the importance of holding a meeting of these characteristics in Lanzarote, emphasizing that it is a pioneering initiative “that will allow progress in prevention” through knowledge, dissemination, and accompaniment focused on highly sensitive people. “These general interest conferences are very useful for professionals and families when it comes to learning more about this personality trait and thus being able to recognize it. According to estimates, between 10% and 15% of our society has some type of high sensitivity profile, and it is essential to identify it,” noted the counselor before inviting citizens to participate in these conferences “where we will have very prestigious speakers,” he commented.

For her part, María González has highlighted the relevance of generating training and meeting spaces that allow for a better understanding of this personality trait and its impact on daily life, since it is important to specify this personal characteristic, not a disorder, because it can lead to some pathology. The expert has thanked the Cabildo de Lanzarote for its commitment to these first High Sensitivity Conferences in the Canary Islands - Working on Mental Health, “to inform and train” in a preventive social work.

A pioneering meeting

For the first time, Lanzarote will host a regional meeting of this caliber focused on high sensitivity, a personality trait that implies a greater depth in emotional and sensory processing.

The events are born with the objective of giving visibility and disseminating knowledge about Highly Sensitive Persons (HSP), contributing to more and more people being able to identify and understand this trait, often erroneously perceived as a differentiating or even problematic element.

However, as specialists highlight, discovering that one is a highly sensitive person can have a profoundly positive impact on the individual, since it allows reinterpreting many personal characteristics as part of a particular -and valuable- way of perceiving the world.

This initiative of the Cabildo is also framed within the actions contemplated in the Accessibility and Inclusion Strategy of Lanzarote and La Graciosa 2024–2030, designed and launched by the current island Government.

What matters will be addressed?

The conferences will address high sensitivity from a multidisciplinary perspective, connecting areas such as business, health, education, or family life. The program includes different presentations, workshops, and discussion spaces designed to deepen the understanding of this personality trait and its impact on mental health and well-being.

Among the most outstanding contents of the program are, for example, “Sensitivity and talent in the work environment”: This block is focused on entrepreneurs, human resources managers and business owners, this block will analyze empathetic leadership, the strengths of highly sensitive workers and strategies to prevent work stress.

Another block of analysis will be "Health and social services: Caring for those who care". It is a space aimed at health, psychology, social work or social education professionals, focused on the detection of high sensitivity, therapeutic strategies and burnout prevention.

The participants will open the second day of the Conference with the section on “Education: Educating from sensitivity”. Aimed at teachers and counselors, it will delve into how to identify and support highly sensitive students, with inclusive pedagogical strategies and good educational practices.

And then they will conclude with the presentation “Families and society: Understanding to accompany”. It is a block focused on families and citizenship in general that seeks to foster a greater social understanding of high sensitivity and offer tools for emotional accompaniment.

The sessions will also include practical workshops, round tables, and networking spaces, facilitating the exchange of experiences between professionals and participants.
