The Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty of the Government of the Canary Islands has scheduled a series of talks that will visit all the islands with wine production to inform about the new protocols to prevent the spread of phylloxera during the pruning and planting period and to give continuity to the measures implemented for the control and eradication of this aphid.
During these meetings, framed within the current phase of the Containment Plan, the content of the technical documents presented to the wine sector by the regional Executive at the end of January will be addressed, in which the protocols for the movement of vine plant material intended for planting, for the management of pruning waste, and for biosecurity measures in plots, machinery, personnel, and materials are established.
About these informative sessions, the counselor Narvay Quintero, pointed out that “we must continue working together with the Regulatory Councils of the Archipelago's wine PDOs and the Cabildos to comply with these protocols and thus guarantee the health safety of the wine-growing areas during the pruning and planting period, in the same way that we achieved it, thanks to the collaboration of all sector agents and the different administrations, during the last harvest.”
The cycle will start in La Palma tomorrow, February 24, with a talk at the Casa de la Cultura de Tijarafe, and will continue on Wednesday 25 with another event at the headquarters of the Consejo Regulador del Vino de La Palma, both at 17:00 hours.
In Tenerife, the first meeting will take place on Wednesday, February 25 at 18:00 hours in the Casa de la Cultura of Tacoronte, and will continue with sessions on March 4 at 17:00 hours in La Orotava -location pending confirmation-, on March 5 on José Alberto street s/n of Porís de Abona, and on La Palmita street 10 of La Guancha, both at 17:00 hours.
In Gran Canaria, the appointment is scheduled for this Wednesday, February 26, at 18.00 hours at the Cabildo's Experimental Agricultural Farm, while the Lanzarote session is scheduled for next March 3 at 17.00 hours in the Assembly Hall of the island Cabildo. In Fuerteventura, the talk will be held on March 4 at 16.00 hours in the Congress Palace.
Finally, El Hierro will host another meeting on March 5, whose place and time of celebration are still pending confirmation, as well as in La Gomera, at an appointment at the Social Center of El Cercado, whose date and time will be announced soon.
According to the most recent data, after 7,814 surveys have been carried out to date on all the islands, only 89 (1.1%) have yielded a positive result for phylloxera, all of them located in Tenerife, already treated and eliminated, and restricted to the geographical area where the first case was detected.
