The Plenary Session of the Cabildo of Lanzarote held this Friday has approved the creation of the novel program “Consume Fish from Lanzarote and La Graciosa Voucher”, after passing a motion presented by the insular councilor for Commerce, Armando Santana.
The president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, has highlighted the strategic importance of the program, emphasizing how "with the Consume Fish Bono of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, we advance in the defense of our primary sector, directly supporting fishermen and small businesses, while facilitating access for the most vulnerable families to a fresh, healthy product from our land."
The bonus will be specifically aimed at the most vulnerable families in Lanzarote and La Graciosa, currently identified through comprehensive monitoring by the Cabildo, based on records from the Area of Welfare and Inclusion.
The initiative aims to incentivize the consumption of local fresh fish and seafood, strengthen the artisanal fishing sector, boost fish markets and municipal markets, and contribute to improving the diet of the island population, in a context where the Canary Islands ranks as the autonomous community with the lowest fish consumption nationwide.
Councilor Armando Santana has stated that the "Consume Fish from Lanzarote and La Graciosa" voucher "is born to respond to an evident reality: the decline in fish consumption and the difficulties faced by the fishing sector and local businesses." Santana has stated that "a simple economic incentive can make a difference."
Direct discount on purchase
The program includes the implementation of a voucher system aimed at the most vulnerable families, with direct discounts on the purchase of fresh fish and seafood in participating establishments on both islands. Among the planned measures are an individual voucher of up to 50 euros per person, discounts of up to 25% per purchase, weekly limits, as well as the possibility of using digital or physical vouchers via QR code, with a specific validity period.
Traditional fishmongers, municipal markets, fishermen, first sale points, and local proximity businesses may voluntarily join, guaranteeing a system of control, traceability, and monitoring of the program.
Now, the Cabildo of Lanzarote will allocate a specific economic fund to finance this initiative and will carry out informative campaigns to publicize its operation, participating establishments, and the nutritional benefits of consuming fresh fish.
Likewise, an evaluation report will be prepared that will allow its continuation or expansion to be assessed based on the results obtained in this initiative, whose primary objective is to facilitate healthier eating and boost the primary sector.
