Tías closes the water of the showers on the beaches of Puerto del Carmen

The measure is due to water supply problems in Lanzarote, but the operation of the foot baths, which consume less than showers, is maintained.

The Tías City Council communicates that, due to restrictions in the water supply in Lanzarote, it is forced to cut off the water for the showers on the municipality's beaches starting this week. All beaches in the municipality will be affected, from Playa Chica to Matagorda, including the coves of La Peñita, Barranquillo, and Pocillos.

The coastline of the municipality of Tías, from the head of Lanzarote airport to the La Tiñosa area, has athirty showers on its beaches. The council has had to intervene to cut off part of their operation because the water situation in Lanzarote has become "unsustainable".

“We are the first tourist destination in Lanzarote and we work to provide services to the tourism sector that sustains our economy, but we have to be consistent with the situation that the island and many towns in the municipality are suffering, where water cuts do not cease and are constant,” explains the mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz.

He adds that “this is a temporary closure, but our main objective is to reduce the impact of water consumption, avoid waste, and protect natural resources. What cannot be sustained over time is the water emergency situation in Lanzarote and La Graciosa, with continuous supply cuts to the citizens”.

The Councilor for Beaches, Christopher Notario, clarifies that “the closure of the showers and the maintenance of the footbaths guarantee a service to all beach users but drastically reduces the consumption of thousands of liters of water that are wasted in the showers”.

“We must opt for a responsible use of the beach that is respectful of other users and the environment around us. We can reflect on the exaggerated consumption of water and continue to enjoy the beaches, being aware that resources are limited,” concludes the councilor.
