The PSOE of Lanzarote denounces that families on the island are raising money to install air conditioning in educational centers due to the heat endured by students in classrooms, while Fernando Clavijo's government has left almost 3.3 billion euros unspent in its three liquidated budgets.
The councilor of the Socialist Group in the Cabildo of Lanzarote and former insular director of Education, Celeste Callero, has criticized that the Executive's lack of response is leading families to assume expenses to guarantee adequate conditions in the centers.
"It is inadmissible that families have to organize collections so that their sons and daughters stop suffering from the heat in classrooms. They already make a huge effort to cover the costs of the school year and now they are raising money to resolve a need that the Administration should attend to," she stated.
Callero has described as "outrageous" that the Minister of Education, Poli Suárez, states that the centers can install air conditioning using their own funds.
"It is outrageous that Poli Suárez refers educational centers to their own funds while families from Lanzarote are gathering money to buy these units. Those resources also have to cover the daily operations and other needs of schools and institutes. How can a government that has left almost 3.3 billion euros unspent transfer that burden to them?" she denounced.
The socialist councilor recalled that the Government of Spain, presided over by Pedro Sánchez, has injected more funds than ever into the Canary Islands, providing Clavijo's Executive with historic funding to meet the needs of the citizens.
"Pedro Sánchez's Government has sent more resources to the Canary Islands than ever before, and Clavijo's Executive has been unable to translate that funding into improvements in housing, health, and education. Needs continue to accumulate while they leave billions unspent. That families end up organizing collections to install air conditioning in classrooms demonstrates that management failure," she affirmed.
Callero has also questioned that Poli Suárez considers it "impossible" to reach an educational investment of 5% of GDP, while educational communities await responses to problems that affect the well-being of students and the working conditions of teaching staff.
“With more resources than ever, the counselor considers it impossible to reach 5% of GDP in education and leaves air conditioning to the funds that each center has. His obligation is to plan, defend educational investment and execute available resources so that solutions reach the classrooms,” he stated.
For the PSOE, the almost 3.3 billion euros unexecuted in the set of the three liquidated budgets of the Government of CC and PP oblige the Executive to give explanations about its priorities and its management capacity.
“Clavijo has to explain how he allows families to collect money to air-condition classrooms while his Government accumulates billions unspent. His responsibility is to convert the budget into services and improvements for the population. In Lanzarote, there are families putting money out of their own pockets because those solutions are not arriving,” Callero pointed out.
The counselor also warned that making these actions dependent on family contributions can aggravate inequalities between centers. “The conditions in which a boy or girl learns cannot depend on the money that their family or educational community manages to raise. Public education must guarantee a response for everyone,” she stressed.
Therefore, the PSOE of Lanzarote demands that the Ministry of Education urgently evaluate the air conditioning needs of the island's centers and establish a schedule of actions with specific funding, without charging their cost to families or compromising resources allocated to the ordinary functioning of schools and institutes.
“The involvement of families deserves respect and a response worthy of it. Clavijo and Poli Suárez have to assume their responsibility and guarantee that our students can learn in dignified conditions,” he concluded.
