The Lanzarote Consortium of Security and Emergencies officially presented this Monday, at the CEIP Nazaret in the municipality of Teguise, the tenth edition of the “Prevention Campaign aimed at reducing drownings and other common risks in aquatic environments”.

Present at the presentation were the president of the Lanzarote Consortium of Security and Emergencies, Francisco J. Aparicio; the mayor of Teguise, Olivia Duque; the prevention manager of the Mapfre Canarias Foundation, Laura Ojeda; and representatives of security and beaches from the different municipalities.

The project, consolidated under the slogan “This Summer a Safe Dip”, is carried out in direct collaboration with the Mapfre Canarias Foundation, the Directorate of the Health Area of Lanzarote, the Red Cross, and local Civil Protection groups.

The president of the Lanzarote Consortium of Security and Emergencies, Francisco J. Aparicio, stated at the presentation that “behind every statistic there is a family tragedy that in most cases could be avoided with information and prudence”. “Therefore, we redouble our training efforts for another year to provide the population with the basic tools that make the difference between a scare and an irreversible tragedy," he added, recalling the vital importance of raising awareness among both residents and visitors during the summer period.

For her part, the prevention manager of the Mapfre Canarias Foundation, Laura Ojeda, maintained that this campaign “is fundamental for the common objective: saving lives”. “It is key to inform the little ones about the advice and how to act in case of a possible drowning,” she added.

The continuity of this work responds to a primary need supported by worrying statistical data. According to the National Drowning Report (INA), the Canary Islands registered a notable increase in mortality with 75 deaths by drowning in 2025, compared to the 63 victims counted in 2024. The islands continue to be positioned as one of the autonomous communities with the highest incidence and, so far this year, between January and May 2026, the archipelago has already had to lament the loss of 24 lives for this reason on its coasts and swimming pools.

The campaign is designed as a recreational and non-profit activity structured in two main blocks of practical learning. Firstly, basic prevention notions are conveyed, which include essential guidelines such as the advisability of always bathing accompanied, the importance of getting wet before entering the water suddenly, avoiding heavy meals before bathing, staying away from the shore in natural areas, and knowing the meaning of beach flag signals in detail. Secondly, basic training workshops on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and PAS (Protect, Act, and Assist) Conduct are provided.

These workshops, led by the Instructor Technician of the Lanzarote Health Area, Benjamín Nieves, teach essential skills for recognizing cardiopulmonary arrest and gaining vital minutes by providing correct assistance before the arrival of emergency medical services.

The itinerary planned for this summer includes a training day in each municipality, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, with the possibility of extending the sessions to local beaches and summer schools depending on technical availability.

After starting this Monday in Teguise, the campaign will move to Tinajo on Thursday, July 9, to San Bartolomé on July 16, and to Haría on July 23. During August, the activities will take place in Tías on Thursday the 6th, on the island of La Graciosa on Thursday the 13th, in Yaiza on Thursday the 20th, and will formally conclude in the capital, Arrecife, on Wednesday, August 26, thus completing comprehensive island coverage in favor of aquatic safety.
