The Island Directorate of the General State Administration in Lanzarote held a minute of silence this Thursday morning in memory of Ilham, a 34-year-old woman murdered on August 4 in Badajoz, allegedly by her partner.

The event was attended by representatives of the Mararía Social and Cultural Association for Women, members of the State Security Forces and Corps, citizens, as well as personnel from the Island Directorate, who joined in a joint show of rejection of this new sexist crime.

With this initiative, the Island Directorate joins the call of the Ministry of Equality, together with the Government Delegations and Subdelegations and the Island Directorates, to show its strongest condemnation for this murder and convey its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim.

With Ilham's murder, there are now 24 women murdered by gender violence so far in 2025. In addition, 16 minors have been orphaned as a result of this violence. Since 2003, the figure amounts to 1,318 murdered women, and since 2013, 65 boys and girls have been murdered by sexist violence against their mothers, leaving 485 minors orphaned.

The Island Directorate wanted to emphasize that gender violence is not an isolated event, but a structural manifestation of inequality between women and men, based on discrimination, inequality and power imbalance.

"As a democratic society, we cannot tolerate any type of violence against women for the fact of being women," it was stated during the event. "We must redouble institutional, social and citizen efforts to move towards a more just, egalitarian and free society of sexist violence."

Finally, a call has been made to all institutions, public administrations and the public as a whole to maintain a firm commitment in the fight against gender violence, against any attempt at denial, defending the rights, dignity and life of all women.
