Lanzarote En Pie (LEP) has made public its support for the demonstrations called by various social and environmental organizations of the Canary Islands for April 20 in the islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife, under the slogan: 'The Canary Islands have a limit'.
They also encourage groups and people from Lanzarote, aware of the current situation, to organize and support the demonstrations called. LEP believes that this action "is of utmost importance and that, once again, the Canary Islands must rise in a single voice against a model of tourist exploitation that is seriously endangering the territory we inhabit."
"The particular situation in Lanzarote is critical and requires urgent attention," the municipalists maintain. They also state that "we face challenges that directly affect the quality of life of people and the preservation of the island's natural environment."
In their statement they point out that they "must face the imbalance between the excessive increase in mass tourism and the socioeconomic reality of families; the loss of biodiversity and the degradation of natural spaces; the decrease in the quality of public services; the uncontrolled growth of the vehicle fleet that turns simple journeys into endless odysseys; the impossibility of accessing rental housing with affordable rent, while vacation rentals in the neighborhoods continue to grow; the water emergency that we cannot ignore, etc..."
For LEP, "it is imperative that civil society unite and mobilize to demand a sustainable model that prioritizes the well-being of people, that diversifies the economy and that helps the development of Canarian society. A model that is based on the protection and preservation of unique natural environments; that defends the common good above the economic interests of a few."
From LEP they make "a call to all people and groups to organize and convene the demonstration on April 20 in Lanzarote, for a model that puts people at the center against the economic interests that threaten our identity and our quality of life".
"It is time to raise our voices and demand a change of course in the policies that govern our territory, to guarantee a sustainable and prosperous future for future generations in the Canary Islands," they conclude in their press release.
