LEP denounces the traffic "chaos" in Arrecife

The municipal group of Lanzarote En Pie (LEP) in the Arrecife City Council has announced that it will submit two motions to the Plenary on the "state of neglect that mobility presents in the city."

From LEP they maintain that the proposals are motivated by “the evident chaos that exists in the city in terms of circulation.” Above all, they emphasize the traffic that the Avenida Marítima de Arrecife supports. “The loading and unloading spaces are insufficient, with deteriorated signage and possibly located in impractical areas. There is no control over large or heavy vehicles. The signage is systematically breached. Parking occurs on sidewalks or inside the parks of the Avenue,” they affirm.

Leandro Delgado, councilor of the municipal group, has stated that “the opening to road traffic of the Avenida Marítima has caused an increase in circulation in both directions, generating more inconveniences than advantages for a coastal area of great environmental, landscape and commercial value. A semi-pedestrian space in which basic traffic rules are systematically violated, the stipulated maximum speed and established signage are not respected. The lack of control and poor signage means that many tourist vehicles enter pedestrian streets, with the risk that this entails.”

Given this context, Delgado has expressed his discontent because “it is regrettable that mobility in the capital of the Biosphere Reserve is a chaos and without the capacity to resolve it throughout the municipal mandate. An area that could be a low carbon emission zone, a space for citizen enjoyment and a hotel offer has once again become an environment reconquered for the motor vehicle. The car cannot be the measure to build a city.”

From Lanzarote En Pie they indicate that “there are points in the city that become a real chaos at certain times, where there is no presence of Local Police officers regulating traffic.” Likewise, from the political group they indicate that “throughout Astrid Pérez's mandate, urban mobility has been neglected, being unable to activate a plan to improve circulation in Arrecife.” Furthermore, they consider that “this situation must be addressed as soon as possible, it is incomprehensible that there is such a level of apathy and neglect on the part of the city council regarding mobility in the city.”

Environment of the Open Mall Lanzarote

On the other hand, the councilors of Lanzarote En Pie in Arrecife will request the government group to analyze the state of circulation and traffic signage in the surroundings of the shopping center, Open Mall Lanzarote, in order to improve safety conditions.

In this sense, Leandro Delgado has said that “the environment of the shopping center does not seem to present adequate conditions for circulation with safety guarantees, both for vehicles and for pedestrians.” “We believe that this area should be the subject of a study by the Arrecife City Council that responds to these new circumstances, as well as demanding that the property improve the signage of the entrances and exits of the center,” concluded the LEP councilor.
