The Heritage Area of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, directed by Ascensión Toledo, has announced the creation of virtual archaeological funds, in order to bring them closer to the island community. A total of 3,522 available files can be viewed through the website of the Archaeological Fund of Lanzarote.
Ascensión Toledo details that "in 2014 the Heritage Service of the Island Council initiated the first inventory and cataloging work of the archaeological funds." "Until that date we did not have an integrated documentation system that organized the information effectively," he explains.
This first phase concluded the following year with a total of 1478 elements cataloged as excavation reports, material study reports and plans, among others. From there, annual cataloging campaigns have been carried out uninterruptedly from 2016 to the present.
The work carried out has mainly consisted of ordering and numbering the archaeological funds. But it has also been used to photograph the funds, replace both the old bags and the labels that were in poor condition, correctly pack the materials and store them in rigid boxes, following technical conservation criteria.
Thanks to this work, the Island Council has created a virtual space, through the page Archaeological Fund of Lanzarote, where anyone can consult the inventoried materials, in which you can do cross-searches by sites or the nature of the materials. Likewise, a list of downloadable publications on the archeology of the island has been incorporated.
