“The Cabildo of Lanzarote is present here today, in Madrid, to position our Island once again as one of the safest and most sustainable tourist destinations on the market, to strengthen our commitment to quality, and to continue advancing in an economic recovery that is already more than evident”. With these words, the president and tourism councillor of the Cabildo of Lanzarote wanted to inaugurate the International Tourism Fair of Madrid this 2022.

Leading a Lanzarote delegation made up of the managing directors of the Art, Culture and Tourism Centres of Lanzarote, Benjamín Perdomo, and of the Lanzarote Foreign Promotion Society, Héctor Fernández, the president and the councillors will represent the Island until this Sunday, January 23, at Fitur 2022, marked by "sustainability and a commitment to safe destinations in the face of Covid".

“The very celebration of this edition of Fitur means that Spain, the Canary Islands and Lanzarote show, as a sign of tourist normality, that the Fair is being held because the country and the Archipelago are safe destinations and in which all the ideal conditions exist to receive tourists”, the president pointed out.

“We are in one of the largest tourist showcases in the world and we want to take the opportunity to show internationally our commitment and work for the sustainability of the sector, always focused on raising the quality of tourism received and on having icons such as César Manrique or José Saramago as our flag, taking advantage of the celebration of his centenary during this year”, Dolores Corujo stressed.

In this sense, the Lanzarote delegation will hold nearly fifty meetings during these days, a significant volume of contacts with tour operators, airlines, tourism offices, technology organisations, travel agencies or sustainability organisations, thanks to which it will receive valuable information to face the tourist season and the post-Covid tourist recovery.

The economic recovery, increasingly visible

On the other hand, the president pointed out that, "in view of the efforts made in the tourism sector, as well as in other areas, Lanzarote concluded 2021 with more than 64,000 affiliations to Social Security, which is 10% more than the previous year, and closed the year with nearly 7,000 fewer unemployed than the previous year".

According to the Cabildo, in the last quarter of 2021, Lanzarote leads recruitment in the Canary Islands month after month, with significant increases in employment contracts signed and also leads the decline in unemployment in the Archipelago in the same period.

According to these statistics, Lanzarote concluded the past year with unemployment levels prior to the pandemic, which means that “we have been recovering the employment destroyed by the pandemic crisis, which allows us to look forward to the current year with hope, in which the recovery could be consolidated”, the president pointed out.
