Lanzarote joined this Friday in the commemoration of the International Day of Biosphere Reserves. The date was proclaimed by UNESCO at the 41st meeting of its General Conference, in 2021, in order to invite societies to rethink their links with the planet and to understand the conservation of biodiversity and sustainable development as compatible and interdependent objectives.

The resolution pointed out that these spaces represent the embodiment on the territory of the Man and Biosphere (MAB) intergovernmental scientific program, which promotes establishing the bases for a better relationship between people and their environment, "combining the natural and social sciences with a view to improving people's livelihoods and safeguarding natural and managed ecosystems, thus promoting innovative approaches to economic development that are socially and culturally appropriate and environmentally sustainable."

In Lanzarote, this sensitivity is disseminated and defended by the Biosphere Reserve Council, an instrument of institutional and social participation aimed at ensuring compliance with the objectives inherent in the declaration and proposing sustainability actions for the island.

The area councilor, Samuel Martín, recalls that next Friday, November 10, at 11.30 am, the constitutive session of the new Council will take place in the Plenary Hall of the Cabildo, which is formed after the last general and regional elections. The meetings are public and open to the public and are also broadcast via streaming, through the channel of the first Corporation.

The Council brings together neighborhood, environmental, business, tourism, fishing, agricultural, professional associations, immigrant groups and NGOs. Councilors from the Government, representatives of the other political groups, municipalities of the island, the regional Executive, the Ministry of the Environment, the César Manrique Foundation, the UNESCO MaB Program and universities of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and La Laguna, designated by their respective competent bodies, also form part of this participation forum.
