LanzaEntiende, the LGTBIQ+ association of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, have expressed their "strongest condemnation" of the vandalic act caused to the mural located in the municipality of San Bartolomé, a work that for years has symbolized respect, diversity, and coexistence on our island. According to the information published, the mural appeared covered in paint during the early morning, damaging a space whose main message is clear: "Love conquers hate".
"We are not only facing damage to artistic or urban heritage. When a symbol representing equality and diversity is attacked, a message is sent that seeks to intimidate and question the presence and dignity of LGTBIQ+ people. Therefore, these acts cannot be minimized or normalized," they have stated.
Lanzarote has demonstrated on numerous occasions that it is an open, plural island committed to human rights. Precisely for this reason, it is "especially worrying that actions continue to occur directed against spaces that make diversity visible and promote inclusion."
From LanzaEntiende, they have conveyed all their "solidarity to the people who promoted this mural and to those who today feel this attack as something personal. Symbols matter because they represent stories, conquered rights, and people who for too long had to live in silence."
Likewise, they have made a call to public institutions, security forces and bodies, and the entire citizenry so that these acts are investigated and condemned firmly. "The response to hate can never be silence, but collective commitment to coexistence, respect, and the defense of fundamental rights,"
"From LanzaEntiende, we reiterate our commitment to continue working so that Lanzarote and La Graciosa continue to be territories where all people can live with freedom, security, and pride, regardless of their sexual orientation, identity, or gender expression. Because love, diversity, and respect will always be stronger than hate," they concluded.
