The Island Assembly of the Canarian United Left (IUC) in Lanzarote, held this Monday at the premises of the Workers' Trade Union Front of the Canary Islands (FSOC) in Arrecife, has elected Jorge Peñas as the new Island Coordinator of the organization.

A lawyer specializing in social causes for over 25 years, former councilor of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, and professor-tutor of Civil and Family Law at the UNED, Peñas assumes the position “encouraged by the confidence that the members place in me.” In his first statements, he emphasized:

I am taking a step forward, encouraged by the confidence that the members place in me. Now more than ever, a clearly left-wing political force is needed, one that fights to improve people's lives and to defend the environment. We aspire, as Antonio Maíllo has stated, to a unity of action among progressive forces, led by Izquierda Unida, hand in hand with unions and social movements.”

During the Assembly, the main political and social challenges of the island were analyzed: the water crisis and supply cuts, access to housing, working conditions, and the growing social vulnerability in the different municipalities. The delegates who will represent Lanzarote in the XV National Assembly of Izquierda Unida Canaria, which will take place on November 8, were also appointed. The island will have four representatives, including Peñas himself.

The meeting also reaffirmed the roadmap approved in July 2024, with the commitment to maintain an active presence in the media and promote proposals that are "clear, realistic, and in defense of the island's social majority."

The Organization Secretariat, headed by Solange Voiry, highlighted the relevance of this new stage "to strengthen Izquierda Unida in Lanzarote and consolidate its role as a political and social benchmark in the defense of the rights of citizens and the territory."
