The candidate for Mayor of San Bartolomé for Lanzarote En Pie (LEP), Jorge Díaz, assures that one of the clear objectives of his government will be "the realization and execution of a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) for the entire municipality."
“It is essential to implement more sustainable forms of transportation in the municipality (walking, circulating with baby carriages or wheelchairs, cycling or using public transportation), reducing energy consumption and polluting emissions, while guaranteeing the quality of life of citizens”, said Jorge Díaz.
Díaz explained that the objective of the SUMP is to “place people at the center of planning, guarantee a healthy environment where you can walk and cycle along accessible, safe and attractive routes and where longer journeys, whether for work, educational, health or leisure reasons, are resolved through public transport.”
In this line, the candidate made it clear that “connecting the different population centers of the municipality with accessible pedestrian paths or walkways, a bicycle lane and public transport is essential for the social cohesion of San Bartolomé"
"It is important that any resident can enjoy the various municipal infrastructures or go to the health center without having to use the car and without risk of being run over." For example, "people from Mozaga or the area of La Florida and El Islote cannot access San Bartolomé on foot without having to cross the road, with the risks that this entails,” he adds.
He also revealed that the SUMP will include issues related to "road traffic, such as the direction and route of the streets, the problem of parking, or the entrances and exits of the different towns in the municipality," he advances.
“We want to do things in a planned way, studying the possible alternatives and agreeing on decisions, unlike what the current government group does," he points out.
Finally, Díaz pointed out that "participatory processes are essential because they allow identifying and incorporating the concerns of citizens." Furthermore, "they feed the analysis and facilitate the generation of alternatives and action measures through consensus," they argue.
Therefore, the first step we will take will be "the creation of the Mobility Table, which will include citizen organizations, environmental associations, urban cyclists, people with disabilities, AMPAS, social and economic entities, as well as the city council and political parties," concludes Jorge Díaz.
