The parties are beginning to grease the machinery for the May 2027 elections. Jacobo Medina (PP), Minister of Public Works of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, appeared this Wednesday on the program Buenos días, Lanzarote on Radio Lanzarote- Onda Cero where he revealed that he would like to run again to lead the candidacy for the Cabildo de Lanzarote.

The minister pointed out that "I see myself with the strength to even lead the candidacy for the presidency of the island's Cabildo again." Thus, he highlighted "the good work" that was carried out when he ran in 2019 and 2023, when "we increased almost 2,000 votes." "There is the endorsement of good work, not only from this speaker, but from the team that accompanied me at the time, and why not show my enthusiasm for being able to lead the candidacy for the Cabildo de Lanzarote again," he continued.

However, Medina emphasized that "this is my opinion, but it is true that here one must always respect the party's bodies because one thing is what one wants and another is what the party wants." "I have enough strength to lead the candidacy for the Insular Cabildo of Lanzarote again, regardless of the decisions that have been made because I believe I still have a lot to give," he pointed out.

Presidency of the Popular Party of Lanzarote

Regarding whether he plans to run for the Presidency of the Popular Party of Lanzarote, the minister began by saying that "today we have a president legitimately elected by the affiliates, who is Ms. Astrid Pérez, to whom respect is due, and it would seem unfair to me, and especially because it is not the time now, to be talking about positions with respect to a congress that has not even been convened."

In this regard, he asked for "maximum respect" for the current president of the PP and specified that "if a congress were to be convened one day, we would define it there."

Given the probability that Astrid Pérez will run again for party president, Medina said that "everyone has the legitimacy to run because we are in an internal democracy within the party itself, but today there is a lot of talk about that possible congress and, even, the president of the Popular Party in the Canary Islands himself has said that it will be held before the end of the year."

Thus, he has highlighted that "what is needed is to continue working with the teams we have in each of the municipalities, in each of the institutions, and that is what is truly important at the moment".

Regarding whether he prefers a congress over a management committee, the counselor has affirmed that for him "it is". "Management committees are for certain absolutely exceptional circumstances, and I do not believe that on the island of Lanzarote we have extraordinary issues for the declaration of that management committee in the Popular Party of Lanzarote," he has continued.

Jacobo Medina has also responded to the current situation regarding the internal crisis in the PP of Lanzarote, assuring that "it is not hidden from anyone that there were certain decisions by the president of the Popular Party of Lanzarote that did not please a large part of the party and those discrepancies were shown in the media".

"Politics is not a profession and they should not cling to politics like a burning nail, but it is true that people with strength are needed and who do not measure it as a profession, but rather measure it as a vocation, and on the island of Lanzarote there are many issues to resolve, the main challenges," he has concluded.
