The Haría City Council, through the Department of Health, in coordination with the Water Consortium of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, has addressed the recent complaints from citizens about spills into the sea and strong odors in the Punta Mujeres area.
This Tuesday, La Voz published a complaint from several residents in which they denounced the alleged presence of spills coming from the sewers near one of the town's slipways.
After a technical inspection and the analyses carried out in the affected environment, it has been determined that the reported episodes are not due to wastewater spills or failures in the sanitation network. The cause has been attributed to the "proliferation of microalgae, a natural phenomenon that can occur under certain environmental conditions."
The mayor of Haría, Alfredo Villalba, insists that “we want to clarify to the citizens that no spills have been detected in Punta Mujeres. It is a natural phenomenon of algae accumulation, which does not pose any risk to the health of residents.”
For his part, the Councilor for Health, Marcos Lemes, states that “after the analyses carried out, it can be confirmed that it is not wastewater or spills related to sanitation.”
“From the City Council we will continue to pay attention to the evolution of the situation and we will continue working to keep our coasts clean and safe,” concludes the councilor.
