The Haría City Council requests the Cabildo de Lanzarote to hold a working meeting with the island's town councils to jointly address the planning of sporting events that take place on Saturdays and require closures or restrictions on various streets and roads.

The northern corporation considers that these events, many of them highly prestigious and with significant repercussions for the island, need a rethinking of their calendar and routes to reduce the repercussions they generate on mobility and other activities.

In the case of Haría, the City Council points out that the road closures to the municipality on Saturdays have a direct impact on the development of the Haría Artisanal market, an initiative with more than 25 years of history that contributes to dynamizing commercial activity every Saturday and attracting visitors to the municipality, and which has been recognized with the Haría Award for preserving tradition and valuing local products.

The mayor, Alfredo Villalba, considers it necessary to open this space for dialogue between administrations. “We do not question the importance or prestige of the sporting events held in Lanzarote, but rather we believe that we must sit down and look for ways to allow their celebration to be compatible with the activity of our municipalities,” he points out.

Villalba highlights that in Haría “the closures that occur on Saturdays affect access roads and have a direct impact on our Haría Artisanal market, in addition to generating mobility and communication difficulties for residents”.

The mayor argues that the planning of these events must take into account the different activities that take place in the municipalities. “Haría Artisanal has the support of the City Council and we want to continue supporting an activity that is part of the economic and social life of the municipality, which is why we believe it is necessary to study the sports calendar with an island-wide vision and look for alternatives together,” he points out.

The Haría City Council believes that prior coordination between the Cabildo and the municipalities would allow for an analysis of the impact of each event and the study of possible alternative dates, routes, or organizational measures that reduce their impact on mobility and on commercial, cultural, and social activities.
