The former PSOE councilor in Teguise, Pedro Martín, was sentenced this Tuesday by the Provincial Court of Las Palmas to one year and nine months in prison for the continued crimes of fraud and document forgery. The accused has accepted the charges and has reached an agreement with the prosecutor, as reported by the EFE agency, thus avoiding the trial.
In this way, the accused has managed to reduce the sentence initially requested by the Prosecutor's Office, which was six years in prison, which may even allow him to avoid entering prison, as it is a sentence of less than two years.
The oral hearing, which was going to be held last March, but had to be suspended due to an "indisposition" suffered by the accused, was finally scheduled for this Tuesday. However, after the agreement between the defense and the prosecution, there was no trial and the sentence was read directly, accepted by the accused.
In it, it is considered proven that between 2004 and 2005, Pedro Martín appropriated 5,518 euros belonging to the PSOE municipal group in Teguise, through several checks, in which he forged the signature of another councilor of the party.
In addition to the sentence of one year and nine months in prison, Martín has also accepted the sentence to pay a fine and to return 5,518 euros to the Socialist Party. According to the EFE agency, the accused continues to say that he is innocent and that he accepted this agreement with the Prosecutor's Office "just in case it didn't go well for him" in the trial.
