The Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Canary Islands Government, headed by Mariano H. Zapata, issues a favorable environmental report on the project to duplicate the LZ-40 road in the municipalities of Tías and San Bartolomé, which connects Puerto del Carmen with one of the exits of the island's airport.
The positive opinion comes after the simplified environmental impact assessment procedure was completed, in accordance with Law 4/2023 on Environmental Impact, and "after thoroughly analyzing the documentation submitted by the Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility, the promoter of the action," as reported by the Ministry in a statement.
With this step, the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy concludes its participation in the environmental procedure, allowing the project to continue its processing by Public Works for its execution
The councilor for the area, Mariano H. Zapata, highlighted that "this report represents a key step for the advancement of a long-awaited infrastructure for the island, while at the same time guaranteeing maximum environmental protection." "We comply with the law and the highest environmental standards. Our priority is that the necessary works for the development of the Canary Islands are sustainable and respectful of the territory," Zapata pointed out.
The councilor added that his department's work "has focused on ensuring that the duplication of the road complies with all legal assumptions, taking into account the natural spaces and species that inhabit the area." In this regard, he pointed out that "the duplication is being carried out on an existing road and within the same road corridor, without occupying protected land, nor altering natural or landscape values, so the impact is considered null both during the construction phase and during operation."
Zapata also emphasized that "the new LZ-40 will notably improve road safety and connectivity between the main centers in the south and center of Lanzarote, uniting development and sustainability."
The evaluation process has been carried out in accordance with current regulations, with the participation of the competent administrations and interested parties during the public consultation process, ensuring transparency and compliance with administrative deadlines.
