The candidate of Drago Verdes Canarias to the Island Council, Ester Gómez Brodsky, has described the awarding of the project of the highway to the former socialist councilor Caco Henríquez as "absurd". The project led by Alberto Rodríguez is "categorical" against the new and "controversial" highway that the Government of the Canary Islands is planning between Argana and Playa Honda.
"It is clear that other interests are being prioritized over those of the people of Lanzarote, in this case the business of a few, with the connivance of the president Dolores Corujo," criticizes Gómez Brodsky, adding that "the institutions of Lanzarote have remained silent, complacently accepting the orders of their party from Gran Canaria. This island needs representatives who only owe themselves to Lanzarote."
Drago Verdes Canarias has called for the halt, "in line with what has been requested by the island's environmental fabric, experts and technicians in the environment. The highway, considered of "high capacity", would have six lanes for more than eight kilometers passing through land with natural protection due to the passage of sand and with a high landscape value.
For his part, the candidate for the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Rafael Jiménez, accuses the Government of the Canary Islands of "wanting to impose on Lanzarote a work of high environmental cost, against the technical criteria, and crossing a protected land". He assures that the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the island deputies of the autonomous government "have closed ranks around the project, following the position of their party against the people of Lanzarote".
"From Drago Verdes Canarias we call for the halt of the work, and we are willing to put all the resources at our disposal to put our foot down on this ecological attack," asserts Jiménez.
In the statement, Drago Verdes Canarias states that "the highway is the consecration of a development model for the island of Lanzarote where everything is susceptible to being altered or eliminated in order to continue squeezing the island".
From that perspective, it considers that the Government of the Canary Islands "wants to implement a model opposed to sustainability, prioritizing individual transport, and crossing natural spaces. The Government of the Canary Islands, regardless of who is occupying it, has a consensus on the desirable model for the present and future of this island: uncontrolled development. This highway is precisely another fact in that line, they want more cars, and more people, and Lanzarote can't take it anymore.", the coalition concludes in a note.
